Sevavrutis Full Time Volunteers Away From Home

An Intervention program in various fields such as health, education, livelihood, samskara, etc. at various locations in state.

It is rightly said that a life best lived is the one lived for others. Mahatma Gandhi is a notable illumination of selfless service and kind-heartedness. He spent his entire life working for humanity and fighting against injustice. He served the poor and the needy, considering them as his own family. It was not his sole personality which earned him the title; but the great deeds done by an ordinary man in an extraordinary way. Sevavrutis Training Programme is one such medium through which the legacy of Gandhiji could be foretoken.

Started in the year1980, the programme provides training to young men and women, who are referred to as ‘Sevavrutis’ towards serving the needy, underprivileged and marginalized people irrespective of their class, gender, creed, religion and geography. To date, 30 batches of training have been conducted and about 4,150 young volunteers have been trained and provide ongoing support.

Sevavrutis have been working as full time volunteers for a minimum of three years in places assigned out of their native place. Most of them are girls who come from a humble background and have attained education only till 10th or 12th standard. Over a span of 35 years, there have about 4,500 Sevavrutis working in slums, tribal areas and other neglected areas of society by rendering services in various disciplines such as health, hygiene, education, livelihood, cultural, social and economic fields. Out of the total number, about 3,750 are girls. Sometimes, they are made to work in the Vanavasi areas or tribal belts under precarious conditions. They address the basic issues, language serving no barrier for them. Moreover, the volunteers are not provided any remunerations; only basic facilities like food, accommodation etc. are available to them. By their roles, Sevavrutis have inspired thousands of young boys and girls to start similar organization which are more than 100 plus in number, thus serving lakhs of people without any expectations. Hence, the total beneficiaries are two million and the number is still continuing.

Few Sevavratis working as a part of Hindu Seva Pratishthana:

Dedicating their lives for the sole motto of serving the society, these Sevavratis have been working as an integral part of HSP over many years doing selfless service. They did not have any expectations, but a dream in their eyes. A dream to transform, a desire to serve the underprivileged and needy and a want to address their concerns. Just like a candle which itself melts and burns, but provides light to others, these volunteers have spread light into the lives of others being put under difficult circumstances.

We are glad to share the experiences of some of them:
